SK Hynix has completed development of the world's first 1c-node 16Gb LPDDR6 DRAM, a 10nm-class 6th-generation memory technology specifically engineered to accelerate on-device AI workloads. This breakthrough delivers 33% more data processing power compared to existing solutions, directly addressing the memory bandwidth bottleneck that constrains local LLM inference on mobile and edge devices.

The significance of this development lies in enabling practical deployment of larger and more capable models on smartphones and edge devices. Current mobile inference is limited by memory bandwidth and latency; the new LPDDR6 specification allows faster data movement between the processor and memory, reducing overall inference latency for models running directly on phones without cloud connectivity.

With mass production beginning in the second half of 2026, this hardware advancement will fundamentally change what's possible for local LLM deployment at the edge. Practitioners can expect next-generation mobile devices to support larger 7B-13B parameter models with reasonable performance, making privacy-preserving on-device AI a mainstream reality rather than a specialized use case.
